[ARCHIVED] How can you assist in sidewalk safety this winter?

Safety First sign

The City of Liberty Lake and its citizens want to create a community that is safe for everyone -- during the winter and throughout the entire new year.  Here are some things you can do to keep the sidewalks in your area easily accessible and well maintained for own household as well as your wider neighborhood:

What can you do to reduce tripping and slipping hazards at your sidewalk?

❄ Trim back or remove shrubs and bushes that may hang over sidewalks

❄ Repair cracks and heaving

❄ During winter months, shovel and de-ice to keep sidewalks safe.

❄ Tree limbs that hang less than 7.5 feet above the sidewalk should be pruned or removed

What are some of the responsibilities of homeowners?

❄ Homeowners must cut or remove bushes that encroach on or over any part of the sidewalk area.

❄ Homeowners must remove or properly prune tree limbs that hang over the sidewalk area at an elevation of less than 7.5 feet above the sidewalk level.

❄ Homeowners must repair sidewalk damage from heaving or cracks if a tripping hazard is created.

What can you do if you have a trip hazard along the sidewalk bordering your property?

❄ Trip hazards are the responsibility of the adjacent property. If a sidewalk can be ground, then the homeowner can either call a contractor to come out and get the sidewalk smoothed through grinding, or contact Ben Turner at the city's Public Works building (509-613-9901) to inquire about other options.

What can you do if you have questions about sidewalk safety or homeowner sidewalk responsibility, or need to report a sidewalk concern to the city?

Call Ben Turner, the city's Public Works director, at 509-613-9901 or email bturner@libertylakewa.gov.
