[ARCHIVED] LLPD's Derek Arnold receives VFW Public Service Award

Derek Arnold receiving VFW Award coin from Darren Hughes

Corp. Derek Arnold is the Liberty Lake Police Department's newest recipient of the VFW Public Service Award.  Leaders from the Spokane Valley-based Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1435 presented Corp. Arnold with the award during a special presentation at Liberty Lake's police station on Aug. 14.

As part of the presentation that was made before members of the LLPD staff, VFW Post 1435 members Tom Pauley, Jim Devaney, and Darren Hughes presented Arnold with a certificate display and three military challenge coins.

Arnold is an Army veteran who currently serves as a primary instructor for the LLPD as well as an armorer for the department.  He conducts trainings that have helped enhance the marksmanship skills of his fellow officers.  He also has duties as the crew chief for the Spokane County Air I helicopter unit and has been part of several rescue and search operations this past year.  Arnold was promoted to a corporal with the LLPD in July.

In his nomination letter for the VFW recognition, LLPD Deputy Chief Darin Morgan noted that the VFW honoree trained three new officers this year.  He added:  "Corp. Arnold has taken leadership and various weapons instructor courses to not only help his promotional opportunities but also to become a better leader and trainer."
